Liberals increase security funding

The Liberal government of Canada has unveiled an expanded Action Plan on Combatting Hate, aimed at addressing the rising incidence of hate crimes against various communities, including Jews, Muslims, and LGBTQ+ individuals. Announced by Diversity Minister Kamal Khera in Brampton, Ontario, the plan includes a $273.6 million budget over six years, with $65 million allocated specifically for enhancing security at community institutions and religious centers. This funding will assist in installing security measures like cameras and hiring round-the-clock guards. Khera emphasized the necessity of immediate action to combat both online and offline hate. The initiative also aims to strengthen anti-racism efforts through consultation panels and training for Crown prosecutors. The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs welcomed the increased security funding, highlighting the ongoing threats faced by targeted communities.
