Google and Magic Leap Reveal Android XR Prototype

Google and Magic Leap unveiled an Android XR smart‑glasses prototype that pairs Magic Leap’s waveguides and optics with Google’s Raxium microLED light engine, producing stable, crisp visuals in a lightweight, monocular reference design weighing under 50 grams intended for all‑day wear. The prototype was shown publicly as part of an extended partnership between the companies and is being presented as a developer and hardware reference design for the Android XR ecosystem. Google VP of XR Shahram Izadi praised the natural feel of the optics, and the partners said the design prioritizes visual quality, comfort and manufacturability. Magic Leap is repositioning as an AR ecosystem partner and licensor after weak consumer sales and internal restructuring, now supported by major investment from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.
