Rio Tinto Unveils First WA-Made Iron Ore Railcar
Rio Tinto has launched its first locally made iron ore rail car in Western Australia, marking a pivotal step in boosting domestic manufacturing within the iron ore industry. The company is investing approximately A$150 million to produce 100 rail cars in collaboration with Gemco Rail and CRRC Qiqihar Rolling Stock, supported by a $6.9 million grant from the Western Australian government. The initial 40 rail cars will be manufactured at Gemco's Forrestfield facility, with production transitioning to a new site in Karratha later this year, creating up to 25 regional jobs. WA Premier Roger Cook emphasized the importance of local manufacturing for economic diversification, stating this initiative exemplifies the state's vision for future growth. The rail cars are expected to start operations in the Pilbara by the first half of 2025, contributing to a sustainable supply chain for Rio Tinto. This project aligns with the WA government's broader strategy to enhance local manufacturing capabilities and job creation across various sectors.
