New Zealand Government Invests $164M Expanding Urgent, After-Hours Healthcare Nationwide
The New Zealand Government has announced a $164 million investment over four years to expand urgent and after-hours healthcare services nationwide, aiming to improve access and reduce pressure on emergency departments. This funding will establish new 24-hour urgent care clinics in key locations including Counties Manukau, Whangārei, Palmerston North, Tauranga, and Dunedin, while new or expanded daytime services will be rolled out in places like Lower Hutt, Invercargill, and Timaru. The initiative is expected to enable 98% of New Zealanders to access in-person urgent care within an hour's drive, addressing disparities in service availability, especially in rural and remote areas where round-the-clock on-call support will also be enhanced. Health Minister Simeon Brown emphasized that this investment is part of the government's broader plan to ensure timely, quality healthcare for all residents, supporting patients with non-life-threatening conditions and easing hospital burdens. The rollout includes trials in smaller rural communities before expanding to over 70 locations, reflecting a comprehensive approach to improving healthcare accessibility across urban and rural regions. The funding will also maintain existing urgent care services to provide continuity of care nationwide.
