Inmate Dies During Routine Check at Vista Detention Facility, Investigation Underway

A 43-year-old man, Corey Michael Dean, died in custody at the Vista Detention Facility in San Diego County after being found unresponsive in his cell during a routine safety check at around 3 a.m. Deputies immediately began CPR and called for medical assistance, but despite efforts from paramedics and the Vista Fire Department, Dean was pronounced dead at approximately 3:20 a.m. Dean had been held since June 15, 2025, facing multiple burglary and felony vandalism charges. The San Diego County Sheriff's Office extended condolences to the family and assigned a family liaison officer to assist them. The Sheriff's Homicide Unit is conducting a thorough investigation, with the Citizens' Law Enforcement Review Board notified and overseeing the review. The San Diego Medical Examiner's Office will determine the cause and manner of death.
