CONMEBOL Suspends Eleven Uruguayan Players

CONMEBOL has suspended several Uruguayan footballers following a brawl with fans during the Copa América semi-final against Colombia in July. Liverpool's Darwin Núñez received the longest suspension of five matches, while Tottenham's Rodrigo Bentancur was banned for four matches, and three others, including Ronald Araújo and José Maria Giménez, will miss three matches each. The altercation occurred after Uruguay's 1-0 loss, with players confronting fans in the stands, allegedly to protect their families. In addition to the suspensions, financial penalties were imposed: Núñez faces a $20,000 fine, Bentancur $16,000, and others $12,000 each. The sanctions will affect Uruguay's upcoming World Cup qualifying matches, including games against Paraguay and Venezuela. Giménez defended the players' actions as protective, emphasizing the need for safety.
