IBM Details Starling Quantum Computer and Roadmap
IBM has announced plans to build the world's first large-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computer, called Quantum Starling, by 2029 at its Poughkeepsie, New York facility. The system will utilize advanced error-correction techniques, including the Gross code and quantum low-density parity check codes, allowing 200 logical qubits to be produced from about 10,000 physical qubits. Starling is expected to perform 20,000 times more operations than current quantum computers, representing a major leap toward practical quantum advantage. IBM's roadmap features several intermediate quantum processors—Nighthawk, Loon, Kookaburra, and Cockatoo—and aims for an even more powerful Blue Jay system by 2033. These initiatives could transform industries such as pharmaceuticals, logistics, and materials science, as IBM faces competition from Google, Microsoft, and Amazon. The company’s progress is supported by a $150 billion investment in U.S. manufacturing and research, with $30 billion earmarked for quantum and mainframe development.
