Iran executes man

Iran executed Gholamreza Rasaei on Tuesday for the murder of Revolutionary Guards colonel Nader Bayrami during the 2022 protests ignited by the death of Mahsa Amini, who was arrested for breaching the country's strict dress code. This execution marks the tenth related to violence against security personnel during the unrest, which resulted in hundreds of deaths and thousands of arrests. Rasaei was sentenced to death in October 2023 under Sharia law, with the court's verdict upheld by the Iranian Supreme Court. Human rights groups, including Amnesty International, criticized the trial as unfair, noting it relied on forced confessions obtained through torture. The protests, particularly in Iran's Kurdish region, represented a significant challenge to the Shi'ite clerical authorities. This is the first protest-related execution since the election of a relatively moderate president in July 2022, raising concerns about human rights in Iran.
