Socceroos Defeat China 3-1 in Qualifier
Tony Popovic began his tenure as Australia’s coach with a significant 3-1 victory over China in a World Cup qualifier at Adelaide Oval. After trailing 1-0 due to Xie Wenneng's goal, the Socceroos equalized just before halftime with a header from Lewis Miller, assisted by Craig Goodwin. Goodwin then scored a stunning long-range goal in the 53rd minute, and debutant Nishan Velupillay capped the win with a stoppage-time goal, in front of a record crowd. This victory improved Australia’s qualifying prospects, placing them third in their group with four points. The Socceroos now face a crucial match against group leaders Japan, needing to secure a top-two spot for automatic qualification to the 2026 World Cup. Popovic's strategic changes, including starting goalkeeper Joe Gauci over Maty Ryan, were pivotal in the win.
