Manchester Plans Major Revamp of Piccadilly Gardens to Enhance Safety and Vibrancy

Manchester City Council has unveiled a multi-million pound plan to revamp Piccadilly Gardens, aiming to transform the space into a vibrant, safe, and attractive area that Mancunians can be proud of once again. Key elements include removing broken fountains and unsightly concrete walls to create more open green spaces with flowers, trees, and grass, alongside a larger children's play area. Safety improvements feature upgraded street lighting, enhanced CCTV, and a new Greater Manchester Police base on site to deter crime and anti-social behavior. The council is actively involving the public in refining the design, including voting on planting choices through the Manchester Flower Festival. This first phase is part of a broader vision that includes future investments, such as a new transport interchange by Transport for Greater Manchester. Council leader Bev Craig emphasized that the changes respond directly to public feedback, focusing on making Piccadilly Gardens cleaner, brighter, more welcoming, and safer for the millions who visit annually.
