Florida AG Investigates Sanctuary States Issuing CDLs to Undocumented Immigrants After Fatal Crash

Following a deadly crash on the Florida Turnpike involving an undocumented immigrant truck driver, Florida officials have launched investigations into sanctuary states that issue commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs) to undocumented immigrants. Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has called on the U.S. Department of Transportation to suspend CDL programs in states like California and Washington, which allow licenses regardless of immigration status, citing public safety concerns and potential systematic abuse of the licensing process. The crash, caused by 28-year-old Harjinder Singh who obtained his CDL in California despite living illegally in the U.S., resulted in three fatalities and has sparked outrage from Florida officials, including Governor Ron DeSantis and Congressman Jimmy Patronis. Florida has also designated all its weight stations as ICE checkpoints to enforce immigration laws more aggressively. Authorities emphasize that undocumented immigrants cannot obtain driver’s licenses in Florida, and officials question how those not proficient in English can safely operate large commercial vehicles. Additional enforcement measures include enhanced border interdiction and the use of X-ray machines to prevent illegal immigrant truck drivers from operating on Florida roads.
