China Plans Cybersecurity Law Update to Enhance AI Safety Oversight

China is set to amend its Cybersecurity Law to enhance the monitoring and regulation of artificial intelligence (AI) security risks, aiming to support healthy and orderly technological development. The draft amendment, to be reviewed by the National People's Congress Standing Committee, includes new provisions promoting AI safety, foundational research, algorithm innovation, infrastructure improvement, and ethical standards. It also seeks to improve alignment with the Civil Code and the Personal Information Protection Law to strengthen personal data protection. Officials highlighted that AI is driving a technological revolution and socio-economic transformation in China, but also introducing cybersecurity challenges such as increased cybercrimes. The amendments aim to balance technological advancement with security, including expanded legal liabilities and enhanced regulatory frameworks. These measures reflect China's strategic effort to integrate AI deeply into its modernization while safeguarding against associated risks.
