Bristol Motor Speedway Reconstructs Infield After MLB Event Ahead of NASCAR Race
Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee hosted its first Major League Baseball regular-season game, the MLB Speedway Classic between the Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds, drawing a record crowd of 91,032. Immediately after the game, a rapid transition began to convert the venue back into a NASCAR racing facility in preparation for a critical playoff race scheduled for September 13. The transformation had required extensive modifications, including leveling the infield with 17,500 tons of gravel and applying 340 tons of Pennsylvania clay for the baseball diamond, while temporary clubhouses, grandstands, and media booths were constructed for the MLB event. Pit walls were removed for safety during the baseball game and now must be reconstructed, a process complicated by the need to pour and cure concrete properly, despite the use of fast-curing additives. Steve Swift, Speedway Motorsports’ senior vice president of operations, emphasized the logistical challenges but expressed enthusiasm for the task, highlighting partnerships that ensured detailed planning and efficient material recycling, including donations to aid Hurricane Helene recovery efforts. Braves first baseman Matt Olson expressed amazement at the venue's transformation, underscoring the remarkable effort to host the one-time event before returning to its core racing function.
