Investigation Reveals Mail Theft at USPS

A recent investigation by the USPS Office of Inspector General has revealed alarming levels of internal theft among postal workers, with criminal organizations actively recruiting employees to steal checks, credit cards, and narcotics through the postal system. Federal prosecutors recently charged two postal workers from Virginia and North Carolina with stealing over $1 million in business checks, illustrating the severity of the issue. The report highlights that weak policies, staff shortages, and outdated security measures, including malfunctioning surveillance cameras, contribute to this pervasive problem. Postal Police Officers Association President Frank Albergo noted that many workers are motivated by theft rather than a desire to deliver mail. Recommendations to combat these issues include stricter regulations, employee training, and a nationwide policy banning personal belongings in work areas.
