October's First Super Harvest Moon Illuminates Night Sky
The 2025 Harvest Moon, occurring on October 6, is the first supermoon of the year and will appear larger and significantly brighter than a typical full moon due to its proximity to Earth at perigee. This year's Harvest Moon, also called the Super Hunter's Harvest Moon, is notable for its brightness, about 25-30% greater than average, and its historical significance tied to aiding farmers during the harvest season. The moonrise is expected just after sunset, providing an impressive view as the moon appears orange or red near the horizon due to atmospheric scattering. This supermoon also marks the start of a series of four consecutive supermoons extending into early 2026. Additionally, October offers good viewing conditions with mostly clear skies, allowing for moon-gazing and observing accompanying meteor showers like the Draconid. The Hunter's Moon, which follows, will be the brightest supermoon of 2025 and signals the traditional start of hunting season.
