Malaysian Court Postpones Petronas, Petros Gas Dispute for Ongoing Talks
Malaysia's national energy firm Petronas and Sarawak's state-run company Petros have jointly requested and been granted a one-month adjournment in their ongoing court dispute over gas rights to allow continued negotiations. The High Court in Kuching postponed the case to September 30, 2025, as both parties seek a resolution outside of court. The conflict began in October 2024 when Petronas called on a bank guarantee following a demand from Petros related to gas supply, with Petros suing Petronas for allegedly supplying natural gas without a valid licence and seeking a declaration that Petronas' payment demand was unlawful. Despite the legal battle, both parties remain engaged in discussions aiming to settle their differences amicably, reflecting a shared interest by federal and state governments in managing and sharing oil and gas resources. Petronas has not provided additional details about the case, but local media reports highlight the deadlock in negotiations and the accusations of licence violations by Petronas. The adjournment signals a mutual willingness to explore a collaborative approach rather than prolonged litigation.
