Abu Dhabi Opens World’s First Net-Zero Energy Mosque Powered by Solar Panels and Mud
Abu Dhabi is constructing the world's first net-zero energy mosque in Masdar City, set to open in October, designed to produce as much energy as it consumes annually through on-site solar panels. The mosque, which accommodates over 1,300 worshippers, incorporates ancient rammed-earth construction inspired by the 15th-century Al Bidyah Mosque, using local soil to build the large qibla wall that faces Mecca and helps mitigate heat. Due to the fixed qibla orientation, designers utilized innovative solutions such as canopies, angled windows, double-fortified western facades, insulation, and cooling materials to manage solar heat gain and reduce energy consumption by about 35% and water usage by 55%. Smart sensors will monitor occupancy, temperature, and humidity to optimize the use of fans and air conditioning, enhancing energy and water efficiency. This mosque exemplifies a fusion of heritage and modern sustainable architecture and aims to serve as a blueprint for future religious and public buildings in the UAE and beyond. The project reflects a broader trend in the UAE to modernize sacred spaces with greener, minimalist designs that respect traditional elements like minarets and the mihrab while advancing sustainability.
