Cyclone Montha Weakens After Killing Two in Andhra Pradesh, Causes Widespread Rainfall and Damage

Severe Cyclone Montha has weakened into a deep depression after causing significant damage in Andhra Pradesh, where it claimed two lives and disrupted power and transportation, damaging over 1.5 lakh acres of crops. The storm, now moving north-northwest, has largely spared Odisha but continues to bring rainfall to parts of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and southern Chhattisgarh, with weather authorities warning of heavy rains and gusty winds, especially along the Godavari basin in Telangana. Relief efforts are ongoing, with thousands sheltered in camps and restoration work underway; approximately 80% of damaged electric poles in Konaseema district have been restored, and essential supplies and financial assistance have been provided to affected families. The India Meteorological Department advises residents to remain alert as localized heavy rainfall and strong winds may persist, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas. Despite the cyclone's weakening, the risk of waterlogging and flash floods remains high in Telangana districts such as Bhadrachalam, Khammam, and Mulugu.
