CommonSpirit Health, ESO Launch Utah EMS-Hospital Data Exchange Connecting 4,000 First Responders
CommonSpirit Health has partnered with software provider ESO to launch Utah's first emergency medical services (EMS)-hospital data exchange, connecting nearly 4,000 first responders with real-time patient outcome data across three Wasatch Front counties. This partnership links CommonSpirit's five Utah hospitals with EMS and fire agencies, enabling seamless access to longitudinal patient health records via ESO's Health Data Exchange (HDE) platform, which integrates with major electronic health record (EHR) systems. The platform facilitates direct transfer of electronic patient care records (ePCR) to hospitals and provides EMS personnel with timely clinical data such as lab results, imaging, procedure notes, and vital signs. Access to hospital outcome data allows EMS crews to gain enhanced medical knowledge, improving their ability to treat patients and strengthening training programs for continuous care improvement. CommonSpirit’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. Tim Bode emphasized the importance of sharing information between field responders and hospitals to improve patient outcomes, making the tool available to all agencies transporting patients regardless of existing technology partnerships. This innovative interoperability initiative is expected to transform patient care in the region by bridging traditional barriers between hospitals and EMS while ensuring patient data privacy.
