Estonian prime minister
Kristen Michal has been appointed as Estonia's new Prime Minister following Kaja Kallas's resignation to assume the role of the European Union's foreign policy chief. Michal, who secured 64 votes in favor from the Estonian Parliament, emphasized the government's commitment to supporting Ukraine until its victory against Russia, promising increased defense expenditures. He also acknowledged the economic challenges facing Estonia, including a projected GDP deficit of 3.4% for 2024, and indicated plans for tax increases and government spending cuts to address these issues. Michal's coalition government, comprising the Reform Party, Estonia 200, and the Social Democrats, aims to stimulate economic growth while maintaining security priorities amid ongoing tensions with Russia. His leadership is expected to continue the liberal policies of his predecessor, focusing on governance reforms and a green transition. Michal is set to present his cabinet soon, which will require approval from President Alar Karis.
