Ten Fatalities Reported in Virginia Labor Day Crashes

Virginia experienced ten fatalities across eight vehicle crashes during the Labor Day holiday weekend, a decrease from fourteen fatalities in 2023. The incidents occurred between August 30 and September 2, 2024, with two double fatal crashes in Northampton and Henry counties. Virginia State Police Superintendent Colonel Gary T. Settle emphasized the need for caution, urging drivers to slow down, buckle up, and remain sober. During the holiday, law enforcement issued over 5,000 citations for various traffic violations, including speeding and reckless driving, while 77 individuals were charged with DUI. The crashes involved multiple counties and included pedestrian casualties in Caroline County and Lynchburg. Proceeds from fines support the state's Literary Fund for public education initiatives.
