UK Police Arrest Over 20 Supporters of Banned Palestine Action in London
On July 5, 2025, British police arrested over 20 protesters in central London who demonstrated in support of the pro-Palestinian activist group Palestine Action shortly after it was banned under UK anti-terrorism laws. The government proscribed Palestine Action following activists' break-in and damage to a Royal Air Force base in protest of Britain's military support for Israel, with the ban coming into effect after a failed last-minute court challenge by the group. Police warned that expressing support for the group—including chanting, displaying signs, or wearing clothing with its symbols—became a criminal offense punishable by up to 14 years in prison. Protesters, including clergy and health professionals affiliated with the civil liberties group Defend Our Juries, held a silent vigil at Parliament Square, where many were arrested despite arguing that the group advocates non-violent civil disobedience. Critics, including some UN experts and activists, have condemned the ban as authoritarian and disputed the terrorism designation, noting that property damage does not constitute terrorism. The government and police maintain that the proscription is necessary given the violent actions and criminal damage linked to Palestine Action.
