Norwegian Builder Plans World's Tallest Net-Zero Cruise Ship by 2030
Norwegian boatbuilder Hurtigruten is developing Sea Zero, the world's tallest cruise ship, designed to achieve net-zero emissions by 2030 through innovative technologies including electric propulsion, solar-panel-covered retractable sails called OceanWings, and a large battery system capable of powering the ship between charging ports under normal weather conditions. The ship's hull features a 'lubricated' design that pumps air bubbles beneath it to reduce drag, complemented by advanced anti-fouling coatings and regular cleaning to enhance energy efficiency. Sea Zero builds on Hurtigruten’s experience with four battery-hybrid ships but aims to eliminate fossil fuel use entirely, marking a significant step toward sustainable maritime travel. The vessel's length has been extended to 143.5 meters, and the design integrates mature sail technology already used on commercial cargo ships. Meanwhile, Royal Caribbean's newly launched Utopia of the Seas, the second largest cruise ship globally, recently docked in Cozumel, reinforcing the island’s status as a key cruise destination and boosting the local economy through tourism. These developments highlight contrasting trends in the cruise industry: the push for sustainable innovation and the ongoing operation of mega cruise ships with substantial passenger capacities.
