11-Year-Old Survivor Rescued by German NGO
An 11-year-old girl from Sierra Leone was rescued by the German NGO Compass Collective after surviving three days at sea, following the sinking of a migrant boat near Lampedusa, Italy. The boat had departed from Sfax, Tunisia, with 45 people onboard, all feared dead except for the girl who was found clinging to tire tubes and wearing a life jacket. Despite suffering from hypothermia, she was responsive and received medical attention in Lampedusa. This incident underscores the perilous nature of the Central Mediterranean migration route, which has seen over 24,300 deaths or disappearances since 2014, according to the International Organization for Migration. Rescue efforts are ongoing, but no additional survivors or bodies have been found as of yet. UNICEF and other organizations have highlighted the urgent need for safer migration pathways to prevent further tragedies.
