India is advancing its bullet train project between Ahmedabad and Mumbai, as announced by Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in the Lok Sabha. This project, which spans 508 km and includes India's first 21-km undersea rail tunnel, is complex and is being developed with significant assistance from Japan. Currently, construction is actively progressing on a 320 km stretch, particularly after the BJP-Shiv Sena government gained power in Maharashtra in 2022, which facilitated necessary permissions. Vaishnaw emphasized the goal of achieving technological self-reliance, noting that while the project initially depended on foreign technology, India is now focused on developing indigenous capabilities. The minister expressed confidence in the project's timeline, which will become clearer as civil and technological work progresses.
