The UK government, led by Health Secretary Wes Streeting, has announced a pilot scheme to offer weight-loss injections, such as Ozempic and Mounjaro, to unemployed individuals as part of a strategy to alleviate obesity-related health issues and reduce unemployment. This initiative, backed by a £279 million investment from pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly, aims to ease the financial strain on the NHS, as obesity-related illnesses cost the service £11 billion annually. The proposed trials, to be conducted in Greater Manchester, will evaluate the impact of these medications on employment and healthcare utilization. Prime Minister Keir Starmer supports the plan, emphasizing potential economic and health benefits. Critics, however, stress the importance of maintaining healthy lifestyle habits alongside medical interventions, as the NHS cannot solely bear the burden of unhealthy lifestyles.
