Athletics to Use Natural Grass in Sacramento

The Oakland Athletics will play on natural grass at Sutter Health Park in Sacramento starting in 2025, reversing an earlier plan to use synthetic turf. This decision was made following discussions with the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) and player feedback, particularly due to concerns about extreme heat from a synthetic surface during summer months. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred and field consultant Murray Cook played key roles in assessing the options before agreeing on the grass surface to better ensure player safety. In addition to the field change, the stadium will undergo several renovations, including upgrades to clubhouse facilities and dugouts. The A's will share the park with the Sacramento River Cats, maintaining a traditional baseball environment while addressing player comfort. The team is set to open the season against the Chicago Cubs on March 31, 2025.
