Arizona Football Defense Seeks Major Improvement Under New Coach
The Arizona Wildcats football team faced a disappointing 2024 season, finishing 4-8 and struggling on both offense and defense despite high preseason expectations and returning stars Noah Fifita and Tetairoa McMillan. Defensive issues, including poor performance against dual-threat quarterbacks and numerous season-ending injuries, led to a revolving door of players and a defense that allowed an average of 35 points per game. In response, new head coach Brent Brennan made significant changes in the coaching staff and utilized transfers to bolster both sides of the ball. On defense, former New Mexico head coach Danny Gonzales was promoted to defensive coordinator, with an emphasis on improving the secondary and linebacker corps through new transfers like Michael Dansby and Jay'Vion Cole. Offensively, the Wildcats struggled with running the ball and protecting the quarterback, but the offense is expected to improve under new coordinator Seth Doege, aided by transfers such as running back Ismail Mahdi and new offensive line additions. The team also focused on addressing depth at receiver, red zone efficiency, and overall confidence during the offseason, but it remains to be seen if these changes will translate into success on the field in 2025.
