Pagliuca Group to Buy, Move Connecticut Sun to Boston

A group led by Boston Celtics minority owner Steve Pagliuca has agreed to purchase the Connecticut Sun from the Mohegan Tribe for a record $325 million, with plans to relocate the WNBA team to Boston by 2027 and invest $100 million in a new practice facility. The deal marks the highest sale price ever for a women's professional sports franchise and follows the Mohegan Tribe's search for a buyer since their ownership began in 2003. The Sun, who have recently played two sellout games at Boston's TD Garden and currently lack a dedicated practice facility, play in one of the league's smallest venues. Relocation still requires approval from the WNBA and its Board of Governors, who may prefer to reserve Boston as a potential expansion city for 2033. If approved, the Sun could play early-season games in Providence due to scheduling conflicts at TD Garden. The move has garnered broad support from Massachusetts officials and could significantly impact the WNBA amid ongoing league expansion.
