Thailand has initiated a significant crackdown on transnational cybercrime syndicates by cutting off electricity, internet, and fuel supplies to several areas in Myanmar known for hosting scam operations. This unprecedented measure is aimed at disrupting call-center scams that have lured and exploited numerous trafficked individuals, particularly affecting the tourism sector due to rising international scrutiny. Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul emphasized that the shutdown was essential to prevent Thailand from being associated with illegal activities. The action follows a troubling incident where a Chinese actor was abducted and later rescued, highlighting the severity of the issue. The Thai government has coordinated with Myanmar authorities, acknowledging that these criminal networks pose a shared regional challenge.
