Jordan Chiles Appeals Olympic Bronze Medal Ruling

Jordan Chiles, a U.S. gymnast, has appealed to Switzerland's Supreme Court to overturn a ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) that stripped her of a bronze medal in the floor exercise at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The CAS decision followed a challenge from the Romanian team regarding the timing of an appeal made by Chiles’ coach, which they ruled was submitted outside the allowed time frame. Chiles argues that the CAS violated her 'right to be heard' by not considering video evidence that suggested the appeal was timely, as well as failing to disclose a potential conflict of interest involving CAS president Hamid G. Gharavi, who has ties to Romania. The United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee and USA Gymnastics are supporting Chiles in her legal fight, which may extend for months or even years. Chiles had initially placed fifth but was briefly elevated to third before the ruling reinstated Ana Barbosu of Romania as the bronze medalist.
