The UK government has confirmed it will continue compensation payments for victims of the contaminated blood scandal, the worst treatment disaster in NHS history, which infected over 30,000 people with HIV and hepatitis C in the 1970s and 80s. These payments could reach up to £2 million per individual and will be judged on five criteria, including harm caused and social impact. Some victims will also receive additional payments, particularly those subjected to unethical research, such as former pupils of Lord Mayor's Treloar's College. Despite the government's pledge, victims and campaigners remain cautious due to past delays and a perceived lack of transparency. Payments for infected individuals will start by the end of this year, while other affected parties, including family members, will begin receiving compensation in 2025. The government has committed to implementing recommendations from Sir Robert Francis's review of the compensation scheme.
