Spain Parts Ways with Women's Coach Montse Tomé after Euro 2025 Final Defeat

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has decided not to renew Montse Tomé's contract as head coach of the women's national team, with her tenure ending on August 31, 2025. Tomé, who became the first female head coach in September 2023 after serving as assistant to Jorge Vilda, led Spain to victory in the 2023-24 Nations League and to the final of the 2025 Women's Euro, where they lost to England on penalties. Despite these achievements, her leadership faced criticism following a disappointing performance at the Paris Olympics and controversies related to player selections, notably excluding record goalscorer Jenni Hermoso. Sonia Bermúdez, former Spanish international and current under-23 coach, has been appointed as Tomé's successor, supported by Iraia Iturregi in a joint coaching model. The RFEF expressed gratitude to Tomé for her professionalism and contributions during her time with the national teams. This coaching change follows lingering tensions within the federation stemming from the Luis Rubiales scandal after Spain's 2023 World Cup triumph.
