Villeroy & Boch Plans Kiln Closure Putting 100 Staffordshire Jobs at Risk

Villeroy & Boch Group has announced plans to close one of the three tunnel kilns at its Armitage Shanks ceramics factory in Staffordshire, potentially affecting around 100 jobs as part of a strategic global manufacturing review. The company described the decision as difficult, acknowledging the impact on employees, their families, and the local community, while emphasizing appreciation for the workforce's dedication. The closure is opposed by the GMB union, which argues it is detrimental to business and Staffordshire, especially amid rising demand for UK-manufactured sanitary goods and high energy costs. Villeroy & Boch stated that commercial roles and the central distribution center would remain unaffected. The firm will now enter a formal 45-day consultation period with trade unions and employee representatives to discuss the proposed changes. The union has pledged to protect workers' interests and highlighted the importance of the ceramics industry to the region’s economic future.
