Petrillo, who is visually impaired due to Stargardt disease, competed in the women's T12 400 meters but failed to advance to the finals despite setting a personal best time of 57.58 seconds. Her participation has sparked significant controversy, with critics like JK Rowling and Sharron Davies accusing her of having an unfair advantage over other female athletes. Petrillo, who transitioned in 2019 and has won 11 national titles in men's categories before transitioning, will also compete in the T12 200 meters. Despite the backlash, Petrillo hopes her participation will inspire other transgender athletes and promote inclusivity in sports. The International Paralympic Committee noted that Petrillo is not the first transgender athlete to compete, as Dutch discus thrower Ingrid van Kranen did so in the 2016 Paralympics.
