Trae Young Eligible for $229M Extension; Talks Stalled
Trae Young did not reach a contract extension this offseason and is eligible for a four-year, $229 million deal, leaving his long-term future unclear. He said he’s disappointed but remains focused on the present and helping the Hawks after offseason additions including Kristaps Porziņģis, Luke Kennard and Nickeil Alexander-Walker. Last season Young averaged 24.2 points and a league-high 11.6 assists while the Hawks went 40-42 and missed the playoffs. Reports say extension negotiations aren’t on the table this summer and there’s no sign Young is actively seeking a trade, though Atlanta wants to evaluate him alongside players such as Jalen Johnson before committing. If the team performs well next season the sides could resume talks, while another rocky year would increase speculation about his future.
