Aga Khan IV funeral held in Portugal, burial in Egypt planned
The funeral of Prince Karim Al-Hussaini, Aga Khan IV, the 49th spiritual leader of the Shia Ismaili Muslim community, was held in Lisbon, Portugal, with notable dignitaries in attendance, including Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Spain's King Emeritus Juan Carlos. The private ceremony took place at the Ismaili Centre, where family and community leaders paid their respects before his burial in Aswan, Egypt. Following his passing, his son, Rahim Al-Hussaini, was named his successor as Aga Khan V. The Aga Khan was revered for his philanthropic contributions, particularly through the Aga Khan Development Network, which focuses on development initiatives in over 30 countries. His death was declared a significant loss, prompting the Government of Pakistan to announce a national day of mourning in his honor. The late Aga Khan was regarded as a direct descendant of the Prophet Muhammad and was seen as a bridge-builder between Muslim societies and the West.
