British Firm Launches Hybrid Wind-Diesel Tankers in Shanghai

The shipping and maritime sectors are undergoing significant transformations toward renewable energy and decarbonization. Union Maritime is launching the Brands Hatch, the first modern cargo ship combining diesel and wind propulsion with advanced rigid sails, aiming to cut fuel consumption by 16%, signaling a potential revolution in tanker and bulk carrier design. Meanwhile, UK Power Networks is spearheading the Electric Thames project to transition vessels on the River Thames from diesel to clean electric power, including exploring vessel-to-grid technology that enables electric boats to feed surplus energy back into the grid, thereby aiding grid stability and reducing emissions by over 27,000 tonnes annually. This project also involves infrastructure planning for charging hubs to support commercial and tourism operations along the river, with the goal of scaling these innovations nationwide. Additionally, in Sweden, Skellefteå Kraft has doubled the output of its Rengård hydroelectric power station, enhancing hydropower flexibility and contributing to a more robust and sustainable energy system.
