First Day Hikes Planned Across the U.S.

On January 1, 2025, New York state parks will waive parking fees as part of the First Day Hikes program, encouraging families to enjoy scenic winter hikes across nearly 100 locations. Governor Kathy Hochul emphasized the value of outdoor experiences with family and friends to celebrate the New Year. Alongside New York, states like Maine, Colorado, Oregon, and Illinois will host similar events, offering a variety of guided and self-guided hikes, with last year seeing 55,000 participants hiking collectively over 133,000 miles. In San Diego, the San Diego River Park Foundation is organizing a Winter Solstice sunset hike at the newly acquired Lillian Hill Preserve, emphasizing safety and conservation. Participants are advised to prepare appropriately for outdoor conditions and follow safety guidelines during hikes. These events aim to foster community engagement and appreciation for nature across the country.
