Former Travis County Teacher Sentenced 71 Years Child Sex Abuse, Pornography

Kevin Abeyta, a former art teacher at Campbell Elementary School in Austin, has been sentenced to 71 years in prison after being convicted of continuous sexual abuse of a child, possession of child pornography with intent to promote, and possession of child pornography. The Hays County Sheriff's Office launched an investigation in February 2021 following allegations from a minor who was not Abeyta's student. After being interviewed, Abeyta gave several hard drives to a friend, who discovered and reported child sexual abuse material, leading to the seizure of over 1,000 media files including images and videos of the victim. It was also revealed that Abeyta secretly filmed at least one child under her desk at school. The sentence includes a 37-year term for the continuous sexual abuse charge, with no eligibility for parole for that count. Prosecutors thanked the investigators, witnesses, the acquaintance who reported the evidence, and the survivor for their bravery in bringing this case to justice.
