Jason Segel is set to star in the psychological thriller 'Sponsor,' directed by James Ponsoldt, with whom he previously collaborated on 'Shrinking.' The film follows Peter, portrayed by Segel, who faces a life-altering choice between prison and a recovery program after a drunk driving accident, leading him to a charismatic sponsor named Jerry whose unconventional methods push him into a harrowing experience. Segel and Ponsoldt co-wrote the screenplay, aiming to explore the theme of support turning into control, where the person sought for salvation becomes a nightmare. The project is produced by Platinum Dunes and is currently being marketed at the Cannes Film Festival by mk2 and UTA Independent Film Group. The producers are casting for the role of Jerry, and the film promises a darker, emotionally intimate narrative compared to their previous work.
