Multiple Senior Housing Projects Advance Affordable Care in US, Canada

Several new senior and affordable housing projects are advancing across the U.S. and Canada, reflecting a growing focus on specialized living options for older adults. In Watts, Los Angeles, the Gateway Place project will create 134 affordable apartments, including units for veterans, alongside commercial space, aiming to address housing needs in that community. In Bethesda, a 17-story senior housing development will offer a mix of independent living, assisted living, and memory care units, featuring retail and restaurant space and targeting a 2026 opening. Research highlights a challenge in senior housing uptake, with only 5% of seniors moving into such facilities due to preferences to age in place and lease structures; innovations like short-term leases may help expand accessibility. Additionally, in L'Isle-Verte, Quebec, a 20-unit affordable housing project for semi-independent seniors has opened, supported by substantial government investment to enable seniors to remain in their communities.
