Diverse Honorees Named for Israel’s Independence Torches

Israel's 77th Independence Day torch-lighting ceremony will honor a diverse array of individuals reflecting the theme of 'bridges of hope.' Dana International, a transgender singer and Eurovision winner, was selected for her contributions to acceptance and equality, though her choice has faced resistance from conservative groups. Haim Taib, a philanthropist recognized for his work in education, welfare, and Israel-Africa relations, is also among the honorees. Former hostage Eli Sharabi, who spent 490 days in Hamas captivity, will participate, as will former hostage Emily Damari and Olympic medalist Oren Smadja. Prominent Jewish-American commentator Ben Shapiro is included for his outspoken support of Israel, a decision celebrated by officials but likely to spark debate.
