Doug Martin Dies After Oakland Police Encounter
Former All‑Pro NFL running back Doug Martin, 36, died Saturday after suffering a “medical emergency” while in Oakland police custody following reports of a residential break‑in, authorities confirmed. Oakland police say officers encountered Martin at the home just after 4:15 a.m., engaged in a brief struggle while attempting to detain him, after which he became unresponsive; paramedics transported him to a hospital where he later died. The cause of death has not been released, an autopsy is pending, and multiple agencies — including OPD Homicide, Internal Affairs, the Alameda County district attorney, the Community Police Review Agency and the Oakland Police Commission — are investigating; the officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave. Martin’s family has requested privacy as the investigation continues and authorities said they will release more information when they can. A Stockton native and Boise State standout drafted 31st overall in 2012, Martin finished his seven‑season NFL career with 5,356 rushing yards and 30 touchdowns and earned Pro Bowl and first‑team All‑Pro honors. The Buccaneers, Boise State and others in the NFL community issued statements mourning his sudden death and recalling his nickname “Muscle Hamster.”
