Australian police have successfully infiltrated Ghost, an encrypted communications app used by organized crime, resulting in the arrest of 38 suspects across four states and simultaneous detentions in Canada, Sweden, Ireland, and Italy. The app's alleged creator, Jay Je Yoon Jung, has been charged with supporting a criminal organization and profiting from crime proceeds, and he will remain in custody until his court appearance in November. Australian Federal Police Deputy Commissioner Ian McCartney revealed that the operations prevented 50 potential violent crimes by monitoring threats through 125,000 messages and 120 video calls since March. Jung is accused of developing the app for criminal use in 2017 and offering specialized phones to criminals. The operation was aided by international cooperation, including assistance from French authorities that led to the decryption of communications and compromised devices. This significant crackdown follows the establishment of a Europol-led task force targeting Ghost in 2022.
