UEFA Delays Decision on LaLiga, Serie A Overseas Match Plans
UEFA has postponed a decision on proposals by LaLiga and Serie A to stage domestic league matches outside Europe, such as the Villarreal vs Barcelona game planned for Miami and AC Milan vs Como in Perth. The UEFA Executive Committee emphasized the need for comprehensive consultations with all stakeholders, including fans, amid widespread opposition from fan groups and concerns about the integrity of local leagues. Football Supporters Europe and over 500 fan groups strongly oppose these plans, arguing they undermine fan engagement and the traditional European football structure. Despite FIFA's regulatory framework allowing matches outside home countries since 2024 and limited legal grounds to block the moves, UEFA seeks to balance commercial ambitions with preserving European football's essence. The European Commission's sports head criticized the Miami proposal as a 'betrayal,' reflecting broader controversy. UEFA also confirmed the 2027 Champions League final will be held at Atletico Madrid’s Estadio Metropolitano.
