Experts recommend the NHS should allow individuals with lung cancer symptoms to self-refer for chest X-rays to expedite diagnosis and alleviate GP service bottlenecks. This initiative, already piloted in Leeds, Greater Manchester, and Leicestershire, shows a similar detection rate for lung cancer as conventional GP referrals. These self-request services cater to patients with symptoms like persistent cough and fatigue, aiming to improve early detection rates which are crucial for survival. The analysis highlights the need for broader rollout, considering the current strain on GP accessibility and the importance of early diagnosis. Messaging should also target non-smokers, who might not associate their symptoms with lung cancer, to ensure wider awareness and prompt self-referral. Data transparency regarding chest X-ray requests by GP practices is also suggested to identify areas where self-referral could be beneficial.
