Colorado Lee Fire Reaches Fifth-Largest State Wildfire, Burns 113,000 Acres
Two major wildfires near Meeker, Colorado, the Lee Fire and Elk Fire, have collectively burned over 127,000 acres, with the Lee Fire becoming the fifth-largest wildfire in Colorado history at more than 113,000 acres. Both fires, ignited by lightning on August 2, remain only partially contained, with the Lee Fire at 7% containment and the Elk Fire at about 30%. Firefighters, supported by over 1,000 personnel including the Colorado National Guard, continue battling the fires amid challenging conditions of hot, dry weather and strong winds, which are expected to persist and increase fire growth risks. Evacuation orders remain in effect for areas southwest of Meeker and parts of Garfield County, with the Rifle Correctional Center fully evacuated as a precaution. The fires threaten local communities and critical energy infrastructure in Rio Blanco and Garfield counties, prompting ongoing public safety efforts and information meetings. Authorities encourage residents to monitor evacuation notices closely due to rapidly changing conditions and provide updates through official channels.
