Chris Willson, a technology entrepreneur from Utah, spent 15 years and over $1 million restoring a historic cruise ship he purchased on Craigslist in 2008, originally named Wappen von Hamburg. The 293-foot vessel, renamed Aurora, was intended to be turned into a museum and boasted 85 cabins, a swimming pool, and a theater. However, after facing complaints from locals and the sinking of a nearby military tugboat, Willson made the difficult decision to sell Aurora in October 2023. Unfortunately, the ship began taking on water and leaking diesel fuel, leading to the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office declaring it was sinking. Willson expressed deep regret over the situation, stating that selling the ship was one of the hardest things he has ever done. The future of Aurora now looks uncertain as it faces significant environmental risks from the pollution.
