H. pylori Treatment Could Prevent 75% Global Stomach Cancers
A substantial global study led by the International Agency for Research on Cancer reveals that an estimated 15.6 million individuals born between 2008 and 2017 will develop gastric cancer in their lifetime, with approximately 75% of these cases attributable to infection by Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), a common stomach bacterium. This infection, which can be treated with antibiotics and acid blockers, represents the strongest known and preventable risk factor for stomach cancer. The study highlights that mass screening and eradication programs targeting H. pylori could prevent up to 75% of future gastric cancer cases worldwide, with even less-than-perfect programs significantly reducing incidence rates. Asia is projected to bear the heaviest burden, accounting for nearly 68% of cases, followed by the Americas, Africa, and Europe, with demographic changes expected to increase cancer cases particularly in Africa. Despite the high burden, many regions lack comprehensive prevention programs, although some countries such as South Korea, Japan, China, and Bhutan are progressively implementing population-based H. pylori screening and treatment initiatives. Experts urge global health authorities to prioritize gastric cancer prevention by expanding H. pylori control efforts to reduce the rising incidence, especially among younger populations.
